German Vehicle Tax Calculator

Estimate German passenger-car tax from first registration, engine size and CO₂ emissions.

cm³
g/km
Copy the value from field V.7 of the German registration certificate.

First registration and powertrain

Select the powertrain and enter the first-registration date. That date determines which stored German tariff the calculator uses.

Copy the vehicle data

Engine displacement and CO₂ emissions are shown on the German registration certificate. CO₂ is normally in field V.7; verify the official data for your vehicle. Before 2009-07-01: enter the Euro standard from field 14/14.1. CO₂ is optional, except for first registration from 2008-11-05 to 2009-06-30, when the cheaper tariff is calculated.

See both tax components

For supported petrol and diesel passenger cars, the result separates the engine and CO₂ components. Example inputs such as 1,600 cm³ and 140 g/km are evaluated under the tariff selected by first registration.

Supported cases and limits

Pure electric cars are covered only while the stored exemption applies. Hybrid, historic, commercial-vehicle and subsequent weight-based rules are not separately modeled. Refer to the German Finance Ministry calculator and Section 9 KraftStG.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is German vehicle tax calculated?
For supported passenger cars, an engine component per started 100 cm³ and a CO₂ component are added. First registration selects the allowance, bands and rates.
Why does first registration matter?
Before 2009-07-01: enter the Euro standard from field 14/14.1. CO₂ is optional, except for first registration from 2008-11-05 to 2009-06-30, when the cheaper tariff is calculated.
How do engine size and CO₂ affect tax?
The engine component depends on powertrain and each started 100 cm³. The CO₂ component applies the allowance and bands associated with first registration.
What about electric or hybrid vehicles?
Pure electric cars are shown as exempt only within the centrally stored exemption. Hybrids have no separate model and are calculated only under the selected supported powertrain.
Where can I find the required vehicle data?
First registration, engine displacement and CO₂ are on the German registration certificate. CO₂ is normally shown in field V.7.
Which legal baseline is used?
Estimate for normally registered passenger cars; annual total rounded down to whole euros. Rates checked: 2026-09-19 (KraftStG sections 9, 11, 18). The tax assessment remains authoritative.
