Carbon Footprint Calculator

Estimate three annual emission sources from transparent activity data and factors you choose.

kWh
Consumption in kilowatt-hours per year.
kg CO₂e/kWh
Kilograms of carbon-dioxide equivalent per kilowatt-hour.
km
Total vehicle distance included, in kilometers per year.
kg CO₂e/km
Kilograms of carbon-dioxide equivalent per vehicle-kilometer under your chosen boundary.
km
Passenger distance included, in kilometers per year.
kg CO₂e/km
Kilograms of carbon-dioxide equivalent per passenger-kilometer using your preferred climate boundary.

How to enter activity and factors

Enter electricity use and its factor, followed by vehicle distance and factor, then flight distance and factor. Every activity covers one year. Zero is valid when you intentionally exclude a source from the scenario.

Formula and units

Electricity is kWh × kg CO₂e/kWh. Driving and flights are each km × kg CO₂e/km. Every multiplication produces kilograms of CO₂e, and the three amounts are then added for the annual total.

Why you choose the factors

Electricity supply, vehicle, fuel, occupancy, cabin class, and accounting method can materially change factors. Language or browser region is not a sound basis. The calculator therefore uses only the values visibly entered.

Worked example

4,000 kWh at 0.4 kg/kWh produces 1,600 kg. Driving 12,000 km at 0.18 kg/km produces 2,160 kg. Flying 2,000 km at 0.25 kg/km produces 500 kg. The total is 4,260 kg CO₂e, with driving the largest source here.

Comparing scenarios consistently

Keep the same source, unit, and accounting boundary for a before-and-after comparison. Change only the activity or distance. The difference then represents the scenario change instead of a change in method.

Limits of the estimate

Heating, food, goods, services, and other travel are absent. Manufacturing and supply chains appear only if your factor includes them. The result is therefore a partial inventory of three entered sources, not a complete personal life-cycle assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which emissions does the calculator include?
It multiplies electricity use, vehicle kilometers, and flight kilometers by the factor entered for each. It does not automatically add other parts of your life.
Where can I find suitable emission factors?
Use a traceable source matching the electricity product, vehicle, fuel, flight type, and accounting boundary you want. Record its source and year for later comparisons.
What unit must each factor use?
Electricity uses kg CO₂e per kWh. Vehicle and flight use kg CO₂e per kilometer; the flight factor should refer to passenger-kilometers.
Are manufacturing and supply chains included?
Only when your chosen factors explicitly include those life-cycle stages. The calculator does not add manufacturing, infrastructure, or supply-chain emissions itself.
How do I compare two consumption scenarios?
Change the activity value while keeping factors, units, period, and accounting boundary constant. The difference between results is then comparable.
Why is the result not a complete carbon footprint?
Heating, food, purchases, services, and many indirect emissions are absent. The result also depends entirely on the quality and boundary of your factors.
