German Overnight and Fixed-Term Deposit Calculator
Compare term and interest crediting for a German overnight or fixed-term deposit and estimate final balance and tax.
Compare overnight and fixed-term deposits consistently
An overnight deposit remains accessible but its rate can change. A fixed-term deposit locks the capital for an agreed period. The calculator does not rate bank products; it projects your entered terms using a constant nominal rate.
Use term and interest crediting
Enter the deposit, nominal rate, and saver’s allowance still available for the period.
Select the product term.
Choose monthly, annual, or maturity-only interest crediting.
Compare gross interest, effective rate, and the balance after the simplified tax estimate.
Tax is a simplified German planning estimate
The model deducts exactly the saver’s allowance you enter as still available for the period; it neither prorates that amount for short terms nor multiplies it for multi-year terms. Enter the remainder after other investment income yourself. Church tax, exemption orders, and actual annual assessment are excluded.
Check variable rates and fees separately
The calculator assumes an unchanged rate and no fees. Also review cancellation rules, renewal, minimum deposits, rate tiers, and the displayed deposit-guarantee amount for the actual product.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between overnight and fixed-term deposits?
Money in an overnight deposit account remains available on demand, although the interest rate can change. A fixed-term deposit locks in a set amount for an agreed term and rate; it is usually less flexible but may offer a higher rate.
How does this calculator estimate German tax on interest?
It applies the centrally maintained capital-income tax and solidarity surcharge after the remaining saver’s allowance you enter. The amount is not prorated by term; church tax is excluded.
Are deposits protected in Germany?
The result shows the regular statutory deposit-guarantee limit from the centrally dated dataset. Some banks offer additional voluntary protection.
How does interest-crediting frequency affect the result?
At the same nominal rate, more frequent crediting produces a slightly higher effective rate because credited interest can earn interest sooner. Crediting at maturity is modeled without interim reinvestment.
Is the interest rate guaranteed for the whole term?
That depends on the product. Fixed-term deposits usually use an agreed rate, while overnight-account rates can change. The calculator keeps your entered rate constant.
How can I compare products with different terms?
Compare the effective annual rate as well as final balance, access to the money, and the period for which each quoted rate actually applies.
