Frequently Asked Questions
What is GPA?
This calculator uses the GPA convention common in the United States: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0 and F=0. Your GPA is the weighted average across all courses by credit hours.
How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, sum all those values, then divide by total credit hours. Example: A in a 3-credit class (12 points) + B in a 4-credit class (12 points) = 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43 GPA.
What is a good GPA?
What counts as a good GPA depends on the school, program, and purpose. Check the published requirements of the institution you are applying to instead of assuming a universal cutoff.
How does this calculator weight courses?
It uses the 4.0 letter-grade points shown and weights each course only by its credit hours. It does not add AP, honors, or other difficulty bonuses, so confirm your school's own policy before relying on the result.
Can I recover a low GPA?
Yes, but it takes time since all old grades are averaged in. Consistent A's will gradually raise it. Focus on showing an upward trend, and ask about grade forgiveness for repeated courses at your school.
