Margin, markup, and operating result

Gross margin compares gross profit with revenue. Markup compares that same gross profit with direct costs, so the two percentages differ even when they use the same figures.

Other operating expenses are deducted for the operating result. Because taxes, financing, and owner withdrawals are not included, the calculator deliberately avoids calling this net profit.

How to use the calculator

Enter revenue, directly attributable costs, and other operating expenses for the same period. Do not mix tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive amounts. When revenue or direct costs are zero, affected percentages are shown as unavailable rather than as a misleading zero.

Example and limits

With 10,000 in revenue, 6,000 in direct costs, and 1,000 in operating expenses, gross profit is 4,000, gross margin is 40%, and the operating result is 3,000. Discounts, returns, financing, taxes, and cash timing are included only if reflected in your inputs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin compares profit with revenue. Markup compares it with direct costs, so the two formulas produce different percentages.
How do I calculate a selling price for a target margin?
Divide direct cost by one minus the target margin. A cost of 60 and a target margin of 40% produce a selling price of 100.
Can a margin exceed 100 percent?
With non-negative revenue and normal costs, margin cannot exceed 100%. Markup, however, can be much higher than 100%.
Are fixed costs included in the margin?
Direct costs affect gross margin. Other operating expenses, including fixed costs, are deducted only when calculating the operating result and operating margin.
How do discounts and higher purchase costs affect margin?
Discounts reduce revenue and higher purchase costs increase direct costs. With everything else unchanged, both reduce profit and margin.
Why is the operating result not net profit?
The calculator deducts only the direct and operating costs you enter. Taxes, interest, and other omitted items are not included, so the result is not labeled net profit.
