Frequently Asked Questions
What is PTO?
PTO (Paid Time Off) is a bank of time employees use for vacation, sick days, or personal needs. Unlike separate vacation/sick policies, PTO combines all paid leave into one flexible balance.
How is PTO accrual calculated?
Accrual rate = Total annual PTO hours ÷ Pay periods per year. If you get 15 days (120 hours) and are paid bi-weekly (26 periods): 120 ÷ 26 = 4.6 hours per paycheck.
What is 'use it or lose it' PTO?
Some policies reduce or reset unused time at a deadline, while others allow a carryover. This calculator assumes neither rule automatically; enter only the balance that applies to you.
Do employers have to pay out unused PTO?
Payout depends on the rules and agreements that apply to you. The calculator shows only a mathematical value for the remaining hours, not a legal entitlement to payment.
What is the difference between PTO and vacation?
Traditional plans have separate vacation and sick day buckets. PTO combines all paid leave into one pool — more flexible for employees. Some companies still use separate categories.
