Judge the payment and total cost separately

A low monthly payment can depend on a large down payment, capitalized fees, or costs due at return. The calculator therefore separates depreciation from financing and adds known extra charges to the complete cash outlay.

How to use the calculator

  1. Select the currency and interest format shown in the offer.
  2. Enter acquisition value, down payment, residual, and term.
  3. Enter the annual rate or money factor and any tax on the payment.
  4. Add capitalized fees, signing fees, and expected end charges.
  5. Estimate only distance above the contract allowance and its price per unit.

Example result interpretation

With an acquisition value of 40,000 currency units, a 4,000 down payment, a 22,000 residual, 36 months, and a 6% annual rate, the payment is about 534 per month before tax and added fees. About 389 is depreciation and 145 is financing. Returning the asset costs about 23,220 over the term including the down payment.

What to verify in the contract

The residual is not automatically a guaranteed final payment. Maintenance, insurance, damage, wear, registration, and local taxes may follow different rules. For an end-of-term purchase, the comparison adds only the entered residual; buyout fees and added taxes remain excluded.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a lease payment calculated?
The payment combines monthly depreciation and a finance charge. The entered tax is applied to that subtotal. Capitalized fees increase the amount financed.
What role does the residual value play?
The residual is the assumed value at lease end. A higher residual lowers calculated depreciation but may increase return risk or make a later buyout unattractive.
Is a large down payment worthwhile?
A larger down payment lowers the payment and finance charge, but commits more cash immediately. Compare total cost rather than judging an offer by its monthly payment alone.
Which fees are not included automatically?
Only the capitalized, signing, and end fees you enter are included. Add maintenance, insurance, registration, damage, administration, and local charges separately when relevant.
How do excess mileage charges affect cost?
Expected excess miles or kilometres are multiplied by the entered charge per unit and added to return costs. Enter only the expected amount above the contract allowance.
How do I compare leasing with financing or buying?
Use the same ownership period and usage. Compare lease total cost with loan interest, depreciation, running costs, and the remaining asset value under a purchase.
