Insulation Material Calculator

Turn net area, insulation layers, waste, and pack size into a practical order quantity.

From net area to an orderable quantity

Net area includes only the surfaces you will actually insulate. The calculator multiplies it by the number of layers, adds your waste allowance, and divides gross area by the coverage of one board, roll, or other unit. Fractions are always rounded up to whole units and then to complete packs.

How to use the calculator

  1. Find net area after subtracting openings that will not be covered.
  2. Enter usable coverage per board, roll, or other unit.
  3. Select the number of identical insulation layers.
  4. Add a waste allowance and the number of units in each sales pack.

Whole-board and pack example

A 100 m² net area, one layer, and 10% waste produces 110 m² of gross material demand. At 0.72 m² per board, that requires 153 whole boards. If a pack contains eight boards, the calculator rounds the order to 20 packs or 160 boards.

Allowance, cuts, and planning limits

Many corners, junctions, small infill areas, or fragile material may require a larger allowance; uniform areas may need less. Check pack contents, usable dimensions, and return terms for the actual product. This quantity estimate does not assess structure, fireundefined| tojson | escapety, fastening, thermal bridges, moisture design, or building rules. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate net area to insulate?
Measure and add the surfaces that will be covered. Subtract openings only when they need no material, and keep every measurement in the same area unit.
How many boards or rolls do I need?
The calculator divides area including layers and waste by usable coverage per unit, then rounds up to the next whole unit.
How much waste should I allow?
That depends on geometry, cuts, layout, material, and experience. Enter an allowance suited to your project; the calculator assumes no universal percentage.
How do I account for windows and doors?
Subtract larger openings from gross area when they will not be insulated. Also consider whether reveals and junctions need additional small pieces.
How do I calculate multiple insulation layers?
Enter the number of identical full-area layers. The calculator multiplies net area before waste. Calculate different materials separately.
How are pack sizes handled?
After rounding to whole units, the calculator divides by units per pack and rounds up again to a complete sales pack.
Why does this not replace building-physics planning?
The quantity estimate knows nothing about assembly, moisture, structure, fire safety, fastening, thermal bridges, or local rules. It answers only the material-count question.
