Treat SEO as an investment

SEO costs are usually ongoing, while incremental visits and revenue take time to appear. This calculator therefore models more than a single month: it phases in the assumed traffic gain and accumulates costs and contribution over the selected horizon.

SEO ROI compares estimated profit after SEO costs with total SEO costs. A positive value means the assumed contribution exceeds the cost within this scenario. It is not a guarantee of organic growth.

How to build a useful scenario

  1. Enter the monthly SEO cost, including the internal or external work you want to account for.
  2. Estimate incremental monthly organic visits at full impact. Include only visits that likely would not have happened without the work.
  3. Use conversion rate, average order value and contribution margin to estimate the economic value of those visits.
  4. Choose a planning horizon and a realistic ramp-up period. The assumed traffic gain increases linearly during that ramp.
  5. Compare several scenarios instead of relying on one forecast.

The currency selector changes presentation only; it does not convert the amounts you enter.

Example with a ramp-up period

At a monthly cost of 2,000, 5,000 incremental visits at full impact, a 2% conversion rate, an order value of 50 and a 50% contribution margin, the full-impact contribution is 2,500 per month. With a three-month ramp, only a proportion of that amount is included in the first months.

The line chart shows when cumulative contribution reaches cumulative cost. The second chart shows how estimated conversions are derived from incremental visits.

Limits of the calculation

SEO attribution is never perfectly clear. Brand awareness, seasonal demand, other campaigns, returning customers and changes to the offer or website can affect traffic and conversions at the same time. Rankings and search demand also do not necessarily grow in a straight line.

Use the result as a planning scenario. Once work begins, regularly compare the assumptions with measured incremental visits, qualified conversions and contribution.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the calculator determine SEO ROI?
It subtracts SEO cost from the estimated contribution generated by incremental conversions, then divides that result by SEO cost for the selected horizon.
Which SEO costs should I include?
Include internal and external work attributable to the initiative, such as content, technical work, consulting, and tools. You can spread one-time costs across the months analyzed.
How should I estimate incremental organic traffic?
Use only visits that likely would not occur without the planned SEO work. Existing traffic and unrelated baseline growth should not be included.
Why does the calculator use contribution margin?
Revenue alone does not pay for SEO. Contribution margin represents the share remaining after variable costs to cover the investment.
How is the SEO delay represented?
During the entered ramp-up period, incremental traffic rises linearly to the target. This is a transparent scenario, not a ranking or indexing forecast.
Why can SEO not be fully attributed?
Brand exposure, other channels, seasonality, and measurement limits affect traffic and conversions. Treat the result as a scenario and compare it with a credible baseline.
