File Size Converter

Convert bits, bytes, decimal and binary file-size units

Distinguish bits from bytes

One byte contains eight bits. A lowercase “b” means bit, while an uppercase “B” means byte. An 80 Mb amount therefore equals 10 MB. Internet connections are commonly advertised in bits per second, while files and storage are usually measured in bytes.

Decimal and binary prefixes

Decimal units increase by a factor of 1,000: 1 KB is 1,000 bytes and 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Binary IEC units increase by a factor of 1,024: 1 KiB is 1,024 bytes and 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. The converter keeps both systems explicit.

How to convert a file size

  1. Enter the numeric value of the original size.
  2. Select the original unit under “From.”
  3. Select the required target unit under “To.”
  4. Use the swap button to reverse the conversion quickly.

Storage and transfer examples

A file listed as 2 GB equals 2,000 MB but only about 1.863 GiB. On an ideal 100 Mbit/s connection, a 1 GB file takes 80 seconds to transfer because 1 GB is 8,000 megabits. Protocol overhead and changing connection speed increase real transfer time.

Limits of the result

The converter changes size units only. It does not include file-system overhead, compression, reserved storage, or transfer losses. Small results use more decimal places than large values so the conversion remains readable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a bit and a byte?
One byte contains eight bits. A bit uses a lowercase b and a byte uses an uppercase B, so 8 Mb equals exactly 1 MB.
How do MB and MiB differ?
One MB contains 1,000,000 bytes in the decimal system. One MiB contains 1,048,576 bytes in the binary system. Both measure storage using different prefixes.
Why does an operating system show less storage?
Manufacturers usually state decimal capacity, while some operating systems calculate in binary or label binary values with decimal abbreviations. Formatting and system areas also consume space.
How do I convert gigabytes to megabytes?
Multiply GB by 1,000 in the decimal system. In the binary system, 1 GiB equals exactly 1,024 MiB. Do not treat GB and GiB as interchangeable.
Which unit is used for internet speed?
Internet speed is usually listed in Mbit/s or Gbit/s. Divide the bit rate by eight for a rough conversion to megabytes per second.
How many decimal places are useful for file sizes?
Two or three places are usually enough for an overview. Very small target values need more digits so a nonzero result does not appear to be zero.
