Rate date and official sources

The calculator uses centrally maintained Canadian sales-tax rates current through 2026 and includes the HST reduction in Nova Scotia to 14% on April 1, 2025.

Sources: Canada Revenue Agency GST/HST rates and Canada Revenue Agency place-of-supply rules.

GST, HST, PST, and QST by province

GST is Canada's federal sales tax. Some provinces combine it with their provincial share as HST. British Columbia and Saskatchewan charge PST, Manitoba charges RST, and Quebec charges QST alongside GST. The calculator selects the correct combination for the province and displays the combined rate in the result.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter the price in Canadian dollars.
  2. Select the province or territory where the purchase is taxed.
  3. Choose whether to add tax to a pre-tax price or remove tax from a tax-inclusive total.
  4. Select “Calculate sales tax” to see the pre-tax amount, tax, and total.

Example: a purchase in Quebec

For a C$100.00 pre-tax price, the calculator finds C$5.00 GST and C$9.98 QST. After cent rounding, tax is C$14.98 and the total is C$114.98. Removing tax follows the calculation in reverse, starting with the tax-inclusive amount.

Limits of the estimate

The calculator uses the general rate for the selected province. The actual place of supply can determine which rate applies. Exempt and zero-rated supplies, industry-specific rules, registration requirements, and input tax credits are outside this estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the sales tax in Ontario?
Ontario uses HST, which combines federal and provincial sales tax. The calculator resolves the current rate from the dated Canadian rate set.
Which tax applies in my province?
Select the province or territory. The calculator then uses its general combined GST, HST, PST, RST, or QST rate.
What is the difference between GST, HST, PST, and QST?
GST is the federal tax. HST combines federal and provincial tax. PST or RST is charged separately by some provinces, while Quebec calls its provincial tax QST.
How do I remove tax from a tax-inclusive price?
Select “Remove tax from the tax-inclusive total.” The calculator divides the total by one plus the combined rate and rounds money to cents.
Are all goods and services taxable?
No. Exempt and zero-rated supplies and special industry rules are outside this simple estimate.
Which location determines the tax rate?
Canadian place-of-supply rules determine the applicable rate. The province field is your explicit input and does not independently establish the legal place of supply.
How current are the rates?
The centrally maintained rates were reviewed through 2026. Nova Scotia's HST reduction on April 1, 2025 is included.
